This isn't another label-the-organelles worksheet. It's a 3-week investigation where students work as NIH research assistants—and the only way to solve the case is to actually understand how cells work.

The Four Investigation Phases

Phase 1: Understand & Define (Days 1-4)

Students build foundational knowledge of cell structure and organelle function. They identify which cellular components could be vulnerable to environmental toxins and plan their research strategy.

Phase 2: Explore & Investigate (Days 5-9)

Teams investigate how specific environmental factors—heavy metals, pesticides, radiation, air pollutants—damage cells at the molecular level. They analyze case studies and evaluate scientific sources.

Phase 3: Develop & Test (Days 10-12)

Students create evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies. They apply their understanding of cellular processes to propose real solutions.

Phase 4: Communicate (Days 13-15)

Teams present findings through public health communications, scientific reports, or community presentations. Multiple formats accommodate different strengths.

Standards Alignment

• HS-LS1-1: Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins

• HS-LS1-2: Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems

• HS-LS1-3: Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis

Why This Works
