A starting point for connecting academics to actual life—without reinventing your whole curriculum.

Here's the thing about life skills: they don't have to be a separate subject.

The best moments happen when real-world relevance shows up inside the lesson you're already teaching. When the math problem is also a budgeting problem. When the persuasive essay is also practice for asking a future landlord to fix something.

But building those connections from scratch? On top of everything else? That's a lot.

This template gives you a structure for it. Not a script—just a framework you can use to design lessons that teach academic content and life skills at the same time.

What's Inside

Real-World Lesson Plan Template

A two-page planning guide with built-in prompts for:

Warm-up that answers "why does this matter?" (10-15 min)
Guided practice with hands-on application (20-30 min)
Real-world scenario where students solve an actual problem (20-30 min)
Reflection and exit ticket (10-15 min)

Includes space for standards alignment, differentiation strategies, and extension activities. Works for any subject area.

Real-World Readiness Roadmap

A quick-reference overview of six life skill areas teens need before adulthood:

Personal responsibility & self-care
Financial literacy
Household management
Career & academic planning
Communication & interpersonal skills
Critical thinking & decision making

Each area includes specific, observable skills—not vague goals. Plus a progress tracker and action plan template for targeting what needs work.

Why This Works

It meets you where you are.

You're not starting from zero. You already teach content that connects to real life—this just helps you make that connection explicit (and trackable).

It answers the question students are always asking.

"When am I ever going to use this?" Now you have a built-in answer. Every time.

It gives you a bird's-eye view.

The Readiness Roadmap helps you (or parents, or IEP teams) see what's covered and what's still missing—without guessing.

How to Use It

For educators: Use the lesson template to design a single lesson or map out a unit. Start with whatever content you're already teaching and work backward to the life skill connection.

For parents: Use the Roadmap to get a clear picture of where your teen is. Pick one area. Make a plan. You don't have to tackle everything at once.

For IEP teams or transition planning: The Roadmap doubles as a conversation tool—concrete skills, observable indicators, space to track progress.

This Is a Good Starting Point If...

You want to teach life skills but don't have a dedicated class period for it
You're tired of "when will I use this?" and want a better answer
You need a simple way to see what your teen knows (and what they don't)
You're looking for structure without a rigid curriculum

This won't solve everything. But it gives you a place to start—and sometimes that's the hardest part.

If this is what you've been looking for, it's here.
